Category: Getting to Know You
Hi all.
As you probaply know by reading my profile or some of my posts on the boards i like birds a lot. I like learning about them, about their behaviour, songs etc.
I know that i didn't get many replies for my topicks i created about birds. So i was wondering. Am i the only blind person to like birds for my age?
Why do you think blind people are not interested in birds?
Thinking logically many blind people should like them as they like music but still don't like birds. In my oppinion the song of the birds is like music.
So what is your oppinion on this subject? I would be interested from people who like but especially don't like birds. It would be interesting to see why is that.
Sorry if i should post it in the annimal board but i thought it would feet better here. But comunity leaders are free to move it if they want.
Thanks
I have a parrot, thus fall into the 'like birds' class.
I too think the various songs and calls are musical, especially during mating/nesting season.
Yeah, good point.
If you think about it, your right, but bird song is musicle, its just that we all here it so often, we do not really observe it that much.
If you want more bird fans, then why not do a bct podcast? i kno one guy that got about 3k visits to his site just for a 15 minute podcast.
Very interesting question, BEN.
well, I can't speak for all blind people of course, but , well, I don't kinow, to me, bird sounds just sound like the same sound over and over. I don't have anything against birds, but the sounds just don't interest me much, I prefer actual music with words. Don't feel bad Nikos, I didn't get any responses to my silly things I'm asked in chat rooms. maybe th ereason is people like to be asked what they think, how they feel etc, rather than hearing what others feel and think, at least thats sort of my impression.
wonderwoman
o no, if you think, every birdsong is differnet.
One just needs to take the time to observe the changes, something which i am not payshent enough to do sadly.
Interesting replies so far.
So it might find it usefull to tell you why i like birds since i ask people why they don't like them.
For me birds was the way to know if it was day or night when i was a child. And since i don't like the night the sound of birds was a sign that night is going away and a new day starts.
This is my first memory of me liking birds.
When i started university 3 years ago i just typed in google bird sound effects or something like that and i started discovering different websites about birds. It's then when i started being very interested and i started reading more about birds etc.
My favorite subject about birds is immigration.
I find it amasing how they can travel miles every year. How they know where to go, when to leave etc.
I also find birds a bit simmilar to people in a way. They built their own house by collecting matterial.
These are some of the things that i like about birds.
Look forward to read more responses.
Some birds they have got repetitive songs cuch as different doves and pigeons. But some other birds such as the Great_Tit have got a variaty of calls and they can even imitate the calls of other birds to confuce other male birds and get them away from their teritory or to make them believe that there are more than one birds arround.
Also some birds have got different dialect from place to place.
must be pretty smart in as much as the traveling.
I do like waking up to bird song, when i was first at bording school, there always used to be this one bird outside my window every day at around 7 am.
I can imagen that listening to bird song can be quite relaxing aswell?
Yes i find their song relaxing and i am sure other people do even if they don't like them that much. I heard some albums featuring relaxing music with birds and water sounds to help people relax.
Birds have always interested me. When I was younger I used to live in an area that had a lot of trees. I used to go up to a mountain that was next to my house and trek along the trails. I remember seeing eagles, blue jays, robins, crows, pigeons, owls, hawks, and woodpeckers. But the bird that interested me the most was the humming bird because it is so small and moves so fast. I remember watching it pause in midair to pick at a flower or at a fruit hanging on a branch and I couldn't even see its wings because they flap so quickly; it just looked like a little body floating free in the air. Yeah Nikos I used to have perfect eyesight and would watch these beautiful creatures. I remember seeing the eagles circling in the middle of the air and they would just keep circling until the wind took them up really high; they didn't even move their wings. It was awesome listening to them scream. You would've loved walking in those trails; the smell of sycamore trees, the strong gusts of wind blowing against you, the crows and eagles fighting, man it was beautiful. I saw so many other birds but I can't identify them by name. All I know is that they had beautiful color; red, yellow, blue, black, green, brown, orange, purple, and white. Now some birds from south america, I think that's where they're from, have been introduced to these urban parts of the state. I'm beginning to hear that parots and other kinds of birds supposedly escaped from a zoo or some place like that and are now populating california. I've heard them flying above me on the streets. They're very noisy. It's different with the birds here in the city though; mostly ravens, crows and pigeons are what can be heard and they can be very noisy in the morning because they seem to be territorial. But I wish I lived near a mountain or woods. Birds could give a peaceful effect to life. They could bring a sense of relaxation to the spirit. I understand why you like listening to them and I agree with your opinion that they're singing is nature's music.
Well, I think one situation birds might come in handy is, if you are sick and have either been unconscious or asleep for a long time, and woke up, and couldn't tell if it was day or night, if you heard birds outside the window, you'd know it was day, but if you heard silence,or probably crickets, you'd know it was night. crickets set up a fuss at night sometimes, but i've heard mocking birds start chirping an dmocking other birds at night after all the other birds have gone to bed.
wonderwoman
Hi Wonderwoman.
I don't know about America but in England there are some birds that usually sing during the day but they can be heard during Winter nights as well.
The two most common examples are robbins and songthrashes. I can hear both birds sing after 3 in the morning even if the sun rices at about 8 this time of the year.
They sing near lamp posts so they might think that is day or something.
Also Rascolnicof very interesting observations at post 10. I enjoyed reading your post.
Well, I don't like birds, in fact I don't particularly like animals of any sort apart from dogs. Maybe it's because I live in the country and when I was a kid, there used to be this really annoying bird outside my window and it used to wake me up when I wanted to sleep. and I really hate parots, and budgary gars cos they never seem to shut up, and they copy everything, and parrots can't even re-create things, they copy and that's it. Birdsong is a type of music I suppose, but as a bit of an amateur musician myself, it's music that I can't identify with, for example, I can't go to a guitar or piano and play what they sing, because you just can't hear the notes, maybe that's because my pitch isn't good, I don't know. and I don't like birds that screech, like the Swift for example, it kind of makes me uneasy and I hate the rooster, it wakes me up when I try to sleep.
Lol. I forgot about this topick.
The previous reply came from my girlfriend. If i didn't mannage to convist her to like birds i am sure i am the onlyone now hahahahahaha.
Just joking.
Maybe i should be borned a few centuries back haha.
Seriously I like the replies so far and as i said at post one i want more people to reply who don't like birds because it is interesting to see why they don't. Or maybe they don't dislike them but they just don't care about them.
Any oppinion is welcome.
Hi, Ben. Birds can be neat. I have not studied them thoroughly or anything, but I used to have a clock which has a different bird sound for each hour. At one point several years ago, I spent a substantial amount of time online researching the different calls birds make. It was interesting for me because I have several types of birds around where I live (I live in an area with numerous trees) and I can identify at least a few of the birds based on their sounds. I cannot speak for all blind people, of course, but I thought I would share some of my thoughts.
Oops. I realize I addressed my previous message to Ben when I meant to address it to Nikos.
I had a cocateel at one time and am hoping to get a gray parrot some day, the only thing I don’t like about having a bird is when they break one of there feathers then you have to pull the bottom part out, this takes 2 people and some sight, this needs to be done or they will bleed to death, I would like to get a grey parrot because they are able to learn to speak and easy to train.
I like the birds mate, only fing is, they don't like me eh? Maybe I should start drinking less but nah, can't do that old chap.
Yes this might be true. My girlfriend once said that she didn't understand why i like birds that much because they don't care about me at all. I thought it was funny but probaply true. But i still like them.
Hi Lindsay. I also try and identify birds in my area and i find it very interesting. The feeling is nice after i discover what bird i am listening. For example in November there was a bird singing at 4 in the morning every day and i wanted to k now what it is. Finally i discovered that it was a songthrash.
From your profile i see that you are from the USA. Birds there are different than europeen birds and i am not familiar with them. A good website about north American birds is www.naturesongs.com
It has got recordings of most birds and the birds are categorised well.
